Scanjet 5400C (2400 dpi/48 bit color) main screen problem

Out of the clear blue sky I am getting a different scanning screen to work with. For years I have been getting the screen that appears on page 2 in my HP PrecisionScanPro User's Guide, allowing scanning options at the top of the screen and output size options at the bottom of the screen. Now suddenly I am getting a screen that says What do you want to scan? Color Pic, Grayshade pic, Blk & Wh text oo pic and Custom Settings. I get no response from selecting Custom Settings. I need to be able to size dozens of scanned tables, charts and pictures to fit them into a report I am preparing for publication. HELP PLEASE. Ribbon marks under glass

I've been using the heck out of an HP 4400c scanjet and the ribbon has created straks under the glass. When scanning, it sees the streaks as large black squares on my image. Is there a way to clean the underside of the glass?...
